Is there a file i can copy from Windows that is a data file of my activation info, meaning i can format and reinstall without having to reactivate, losing my precious 2nd activation? I have read about it and Aussie PC magazine but it didnt say how to re-apply the file after the reinstall and nor did it say whether i actually had to re-activate. Ive lost the magazine to make matters worse

Is there any truth to this as the Blaster virus is still affecting me even after security updates and a Symantec search prog. (which said the virus was not on my computer)

Even if Blaster is not to blame i have nothing to lose as this computer is brand new of Sunday and there is no data on it i need.

Any ideas?

Thomas

I think it would be against this sites rules to try and beat XP activation...

I think that thomas__hb might be talking about this? I copied this from TweakXP site. I tried it and it didn't work for me.
" Re-Activate XP"
If you have to reinstall Windows XP you normally will have to reactivate too. Well not anymore. Just copy wpa.dbl after you activated the first time. It is located in the WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now if you reinstall Windows XP just copy the file back and you're up and running again.

If you plan to reinstall XP on the same hardware, you can back up the activation status and then restore it after you reinstall the OS. To save the activation status, back up the wpa.dbl file from the System32 folder to a disk or other location.

After you reinstall the OS, perform the following steps:

1. Start your Windows installation in Minimal Safe mode.
2. Move to the main drive's System32 folder.
3. Rename wpa.dbl to wpa.noact.
4. Copy your backed up wpa.dbl file to the system32 folder.
5. Reboot your system as usual.

Not quite, XP would still check if the hardware as entered in the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak are consistent. If it feels that the hardware has changed (new computer, add/removed hardware enough to take XP out of tolerance) then you would have to do an activation.

It's quite simply not a matter of legality EzyStvy, i activated my overpriced and poorly made software, that was legal, i own a liscence to use the software...thats legal...and if you can find me a law that says that im not allowed to format a HDD, then spank my ass and call me charlie...Microsoft really has got to the governments of this world. Also note that what might not be legal or illegal in your fascist war-mongering and totalitarianistically controlled country could be completely different here in Australia.

Whats more, pull your finger out of your butt and stop adhereing to every little rule that is set out for you. i jaywalk...do something about it...

Thomas,

I think your remarks are uncalled for. This is a computer forum, not a political forum. You may or may not like the US and you have the right to your opinion. But to express it on this forum using overworked, trite, emotional cliches is out of place. And there is no need to personally attack any poster.
