cdrw and XP

Ok so I have been having this problem for a while and have just put it aside, because I cannot figure it out. So a few months ago I built a new comp. I used parts from my existing computer, which I also built. I decided to install Win XP. All was fine and then I noticed that the cdrw was no longer being recognized at startup or in windows. When I first put the comp together it was there, I installed nero etc. and was buring cd's. About a month later my comp wont even recognize the burner. It is getting power I know that. I tried making it the primary drive, still no luck. I checked the jumpers and they all seem fine I also tried different jumper settings with no luck. Im not sure what else to do in light of just buying a new burner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might try uninstalling it, rebooting, and let XP find it. Also, you might try checking for any updates.

hmmm thats an idea I will check for updates, but I cant unstill It because its not there no where to be found nothing in device manager either. At first I thought maybe it was conflicting with my dvd rom but that doesnt seem to be the case since I tried making my burner the primary drive and didnt have the dvd rom connected at all.

Read this on Nero.com. Anyone think It could have anything to do with my issue???

3. I lost the drive letters for my Recorder as well as for my CDROM/DVDROM drives after installing Nero/Nero Express/ or InCD. What can I do to resolve this?

This is a rare occurrence, and it's normally caused by either our installer, or by uninstalling another CD Recording software program from the system.
You will need to edit the Registry to resolve this issue.
Open Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11C E-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now delete the keys:

LowerFilters and UpperFilters.

Now reboot and your optical drives should function again.

ALso go into the Device Manager and look at the Advanced Properties Tab under the Secondary IDE Properties. XP seems to have a nasty habit with two optical drives of making one DMA and the other PIO when both should be DMA.

Well looks like im royally screwed now. I tried editing the registry as in the directions from Nero and now my computer wont even start. All it does is stay on a black screen or ask if i want to run system scan check to hit any key to skip i have hit many keys to skip and the keyboard doesnt respond. I have no clue what to do now.:(

I would just reformat and repartition the hard drive and then reinstall the operating system.

If you can get into bios, set it to boot from the cd or dvd player that was working. Then try a repair using the XP cd as a boot disk. Don't select R for repair at the first screen tho, instead go to new install and select Repair there.

Hi Guys,
I was able to repair my previous version of windows. So now I will be ghosting my hard drive in case I screw things up again. But anyways I still cannot see my burner in bios or in the device manager. I chaged the cable again and nothing. I know the cdrw is getting power etc. I dont know what it is. I dont use the software it came with instead I used Nero and now the damn thing is gone. Like I said when I originally built the computer it was detected in bios and by device manager and now its gone and does nothing. Is this a problem with the burner maybe or is it my motherboard???? Any more advice and help is appreciated

Here's another thought. Uninstall Nero, do a search for Nero after and remove anything else related to it. Make sure you go into Folders option first and permit viewing of hidden folders. Disconnect the questionable drive and start the system. Then power down, reconnect the drive and power up again. XP should recoginze new hardware. If it shows up then and in bios, I would suspect it's the Nero software. I've read in several places where people have had problems with the new version 6.0. Is that the version you are running btw?

Hi Thaks for the advice. I will try uninstalling nero but one big problem is that bios is not recognizing the drive and I dont think that would be related to nero..... or would it ???

I'm not sure about the bios recognition, just trying to eliminate possibilities. You mentioned earlier about trying this drive in the other cable position, did you also try the good drive (the recognized one) in the position of the troubled drive? That would eliminate the cable as culprit.

Well I tried uninstalling nero and still no success. Yes I did try reversing the order of the drives and still the only secondary drive that shows up is my cd rom. Im thinking maybe my cdrw is faulty or something but i dont want to waste money on a new one if its some kind of issue with my motherboard or what not. This is so frustrating lol

The only other way I can think of knowing whether it's the drive or not is put it in another computer and see if it is recognized. You're right, this stuff can be frustrating at times.

Ok so here is what I did instead. I took a spare cd rom that I had and added it in place of my cd burner and it worked it was detected and found and installed drivers. So I am assuming that the burner is faulty?

Guess I'm down to my last WAG (wild ass guess). You're probably right, the burner is faulty. But try this just in case if you want to. If you were jumpered on both drives CS (cable select), try them in a master/slave configuration. If already, master/slave, switch them to CS. If that don't work, guess it's time for a new burner.

Conduct funeral services for the burner if it's jumpered identically to the spare CD-Rom that works.

Yeah I think its time for a new burner. I moved the jumpers around several different ways with no luck. Its just annoying because the burner isnt that old maybe only 2 years. I dont really know the life span, but i hardly used to burn cd's. OH well now I can get something better i havent heard that many good things about acer burners anyway
