XP pro Hard resests for no reason!!!?

For several weeks now, Windows XP pro has been cutting off and restarting for no good reason. It has nothing to so with what program I'm running, becasue it has even happened when I left the computer in standby mode overnight.

When I get back to the computer, I just see the message "windows has recovered a serious error" and I have no clue what to do.

The problem is not a freeze up, or a blue screen or anything like that.

---what happens is almost like somebody came by and kicked the plug! The system just cuts off and then reboots!

I'm scared. Please help me. :confused:

First thing you should do is right click on My Computer, go to Properties...Advanced...Startup and Recovery and make sure "Automatically Reboot" under system failure is not checked. That way, it won't cut off and reboot without giving you the chance to take a look.

It could be caused by many things, hardware or software. Bad memory, bad motherboard, bad PSU...

all so have you checked for the blaster worm virus that has hit a lot of people http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72117 not every one gets the rpc error

Yup-- the auto reset was checked. Is it not good to have that on? So now when the error occurrs what will be different?

I also cheked out that worm and I may be the problem. The only puzzing thing is that I have all the windows updates and Nortion antivirus updates. I'll have to look into it.

the next time you have a problam you may get a blue screan with a error mesage on it wright down the exact mesage and post hear

Yeah I saved the last one-- it looked like this

also if I have XP pro does that mean I have the 64 bit edition?

I'm checking patches and I'm not sure which one to DL

only if you orderd it special and you wood remeber that so it only the 32bit version

No. The 64 bit edition is called Windows XP 64.

Was there anything more to the error message? What you posted just looks like the path to the memory dump.

For what its worth my XP Pro Install was doing exactly the same would re-boot at any time any place, perhaps 2 or 3 times a day updated the drivers for my Graphics card and all now OK.
Just thought I would let you know it may work who knows ?

Hey when this first happened did you get something about a driver error after the computer rebooted?

I'll have to wait till it happens again and see.

The only thing I could think of would be the new bios for the Nvidia chipset on my K7 ntg board I recently updated.

then again, I may have no clue what I'm talking about.

Try going into bios and make sure that your settings are not set to restart on all errors. Maybe in advanced settings, not 100% sure. If it is change it to one of the other choices that you are given or see if it allows you to disable it.
