my hard drive crapped out, i have a Gateway with an AMD Athlon 850. so, i bought a new 40GB 7200 RPM HD, and accidentally purchased 256MB more ram (to give me 768 total), and a GeForce FX5200 GPU. i'm into gaming. do you think this settup will work pretty well? will my CPU lag? should i start all over ?
the HD MIGHT be too big for the BIOS to fully recognize...How big was your old one? Usually if you old one is a decent size the BIOS will allow for a decent upgrade, but if you had one of those 8 or 9gig HD's, you might not be so lucky.
What OS are you running, if its Windows 95/98SE, your gooing to have to do a vcache trick in order to get your system to fully recognize the RAM.
As long as your motherboard has an AGP slot, I dont think you will have any trouble with the 5200

Install memory and video card, test system and make sure it boots,it should reach the point that tells you no bootable device detected, shut system down and with power off, install the hard drive, partion and format the drive, you may wish to split it into 2 partitions.
Check as to what kind of ribbon is used,if it's a 80 wire ribbon and the motherboard supports udma 66,etc,you would jumper the drive to CS(cableselect) and the blue end of the ribbon goes into motherboard and the far black end goes to device to depict master.
If it's a standard ribbon set the drive to master and it doesn't matter which end goes where as long as the red strip on side of ribbon goes to pin1 on motherboard and pin 1 on drive.
If it's a WD drive, master is depicted as no jumper,if it's a stand alone drive.
