my HP 932c manual says to always shut the printer off independently of the PC. why is this? is it true of all printers?
is this a dumb question?

Not a dumb question.
It's more important with USB printers but it applies to all.
Think of it as leaving the faucet on when they shut off the water.
When it's turned back on all hell will break loose.
I usually leave my printer connected to the comp but unplugged till needed.

Perhaps not related to your question, but here's a suggestion anyway:

NEVER turn off the printer by unpluggin the power cord or by turning of the power surge it's plugged to, or you'll end up damaging the flat cable the cartridge craddle receives data from.

Always turn it off by its power button if it has it.
