Im using NIS 2k2 (expired subscription) and want to get something better. Should I replace it with avast and sygate? Keeping in mind that removing NIS will remove NAV that comes with it.

I've been using avast and sygate for about the last 6 mo. and have been very impressed with both.

Does avast use much resources? As long as its less than NAV its OK.

No! it's not a resource hog at all. When I used McAfee or NAV I sometimes noticed some apps would slow down with AV running in the background. Nothing like that happens with Avast.

OK...1 last thing. I already registered and got a code. Is that code for updates and is it true that I need to re-register every 14 months. Also do any of the 2 programs have password protection on the settings. Those are my last questions. Thanks!

I ran avast for 4 months,on W2K and kept getting memory errors when trying to start some programs, went back to AVG no errors since.

That code is your license number. One you are registered you can update. Yes you do have to reregister every 12 or 14 mo.. Yes you can set a password.

I hadn't heard about memory errors when opening apps. I searched the Avast forum and couldn't find that problem talked about either.

I already found the answer to the question above. When I install avast! and sygate can I keep NIS on untill I see that they work well or do I need to uninstall it first. I know they will get in eachothers way but only untill I see they work.

to keep nis on you must disabble it by going in to msconfig and on the start up tab untick any thing to do with nis all so make a full back up of your computer befor you uninstall any norton programs as it has a habet of screwing up windows it seams to be a vendeta type thing like ok if you dont wont me i will screw your computer up its good for the computer repair center i work for at £35.00 a time to fix a computer that has hade a norton uninstal go wrong have a look at this web site for instructions http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/f4ae7ffd10c663ec852569d200713229/b7338caca94cddb2c1256b5100475df6?OpenDocument

I uninstalled it many times without problems. And I can disable it inside the program. What i wanted to know is if I can keep it running untill im sure the other programs work. Becaus im downloading those from places I never downloaded before. And if I have problems with it I want to have NIS with all its updates.

ok, this is my very last question. I finaly have my old pentium connected to the internet. Its a 166MHz pentium with 32MB of RAM. Is that enough to run both, I know they dont use much recources but that doesnt have much to give. If not will it atleast run avast? (the web site doesnt give system requirements)

for web surfing and to test the progs it will be fine all so as you have the old pc you can setup a hardware firewall if you connect to the internet by broad band you install linix on the old pc as a server its a good project and will give you lots of networking experiance and when its setup your new computer is hack proof

I guess it wasnt my last question, lol. I downloaded avast but it told me I need internet explorer 4.1 atleast. All the old computer has is netscape. microsoft.com only has IE6 on their site and it doesnt go on anything under win98. If I go on the IE site netscape gets a error and shutsdown. Anyone know how I can get IE 4.1? Official site if possible.
I wouldn't pollute a perfectly good Win95 box with IE, put AVG on it instead, it's good enough.
If you MUST put IE on, go here:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
The most stable IE for 95 is 5.01 SP2.

I made a search and I have IE2. Looks wierd. Can I upgrade that one? Why is IE bad, I have naver had any problems with it. AVG is for non-network only, I know it will work on one but if its not licensed to I wont use it on one.

the avg non network just means you cant put it on a server but you can put it on each of your computers with no problam
Any IE newer than 3 can destabilize Win95 due to the shell integration. As I said, IE 5.01 SP2 is the *least* trouble.
