It will have some kind of thermal transfer material on it...either thermal paste or a thermal pad.

how hard will the material be to remove

Depends what material is used.
You can use a non-metallic scraper of some type (wooden popcicle stick or tongue depressors work well) to remove most of the gunk and then follow with pure alcohol and clean rags or coffee filters.
Just keep at it until the contact surface of the CPU is clean.
Exactly what kind of 300MHz CPU is it? Intel? AMD? Other?

Take it off and get some thermal paste at CompUSA or Best Buy. It doesnt cost much. I dont like having a thermal patch. I would rather be able to put the paste on every time rather than rely on a piece of "tape."

Maybe. It wouldnt hurt to call them. A tube of thermal paste is only a few $'s. If not, you have to have a Best Buy near you or at least a computer store.

A K6-2 will be fine with the cheap Radio Shack compound as long as it's an active cooler (has a fan).

Actually RadioShacks thermal compound ranks 3rd among available compounds,so it's not so bad.
It's called heatsink compound,part#276-1372

I haven't actually used the stuff in a long time, but I remember reading about a change in the stuff they sold and the new stuff was supposed to be pretty thin and runny. Guess it's not as bad as I thought it was. I have the old Radio Shack compound from some years back and it's a thick white paste that dries out over time. I don't use it anymore.
