Hi there. In my computer i have a regular 52x cd drive and a cd-rw drive. Then one day the computer didnt recognize those 2 drives. All the drivers are there and drives hooked up properly. So i decided to try a different drive (new) to see if it would work. It won't even seen that one!! On the boot up screen it shows that they are there annd that the is "new hardware" but thats it. Is this something in the bios i have to do or through windows xp? I'm kind of new at this so any help is much appreciated. Thanks:)

So they are definitely listed during POST?

Go into the BIOS (CMOS Setup) and redetect the Drives by setting them to AUTO.

Are the drives listed in Device Manager?

If they are, then boot into Safe Mode and remove both (any any duplicates) from Device Manager, then reboot the system.

Are they working now?

If they are not being detected properly by the BIOS, you might want to check all cable connections or try a different ATA cable and power lead.

XP does have a glitch that can cause problems with optical drives; however, I don't want to jump in too soon with the Registry fix until you've done some basic checks.

Thanks for the reply :) I tried that and it still doesn't recognize the drives. But here's another wierd thing. My girlfriend didnt know about the drives and she burnt a cd on the cd-rw drive. And it worked. Now when i put that back into the computer it didnt read it, but when i put that cd in my cd player it worked fine. Does that make sence?

try removeing the ide port that the drives are connected to and then reboot, I have read where the port can get lost. and by redetected it to make it work again.
just go into the device manager and remove the ide port.

I put the bios to auto and it didnt let me use the drives. I also disabled the ide for the drives rebooted and enabled and it sees the drives but there is a "!" beside both. It says something like "the drivers are lost or corrupt..." I tryed searching for new drivers and it didnt work. I also put in the floopy with the drivers that the 52x drive came with and it still didnt work. In the initial startup it shows both drives in there, but they don't work. Is this a lost cause?

Tell us exactly what CD burning software you have installed and uninstalled. If my hunch is correct, Mike's registry fix is probably what you need. There is a known issue with XP and Roxio.

The only burning software that was ever on there was cdrwin, nero and easy cd creator. The only one that i uninstalled was easy cd creator and that was 8-10 months ago.

That's exactly the issue - uninstalling EZ CD Creator.

Hi guys, i went intp regedt32 and got to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, but i'm afraid to delete anything because i don't know which are the upper and lower filters. It goes folders 0000,0001,0002,etc. I just don't want to screw anything up and after reading that link that glc left, i'm kind of scared that if i delete the wrong thing i'll be super screwed. Which ones should i delete? Sorry i'm so green at this, but i'm definatly learning from you guys. Thanks again :)
