Volume Label - Win ME

Follwing on from the previous topic, I now have one of the two computers up and running and are on to formatting the second. I put the 98 Boot disk in and the Windows ME CD-ROM, and got to the DOS. I entered "fdisk" and went to delete the partition. Now on the previous computer I was prompted for a "Volume Label" and a hit of the "Enter" button by-passed it, but when Enter is hit on this one it says "Volume Label doesn't match". I don't have a Volume Label for it so...


Any Ideas?

Is there an existing Partition that you are trying to delete?

FDISK should show you the current Volume Label and then you can just type it in to delete it.

If there is an NTFS Partition, then you are better using Delpart to delete the Partition

Or alternatively, use the HD manufacturer's Low Level Format program to Zero Wipe the HD. That will return the disk to factory condition.

It should display the volume label above. It wants you to confirm it. If it is blank then it should accept blank.

I have heard of viruses that can insert invisible characters here I don't know what can be done in that case.

Right i've got back to the process where I need to install Windows, and am having the same problem as last time. I need so many bytes available to install Windows. With the other computer I had the options of "Start Windows setup from Disk", "Boot computer with CD ROM support" and "Boot computer without CD ROM support". I chose the first one, but now don't have it on this computer, have the last 2 and "View the Help file"

Ideas?

This is really urgent and eveything I try fails, it's as though there is still stuff on the harddrive but I dont know how get it formatted, and get Windows ME re-installed. I have only a short space of time to get this done - theres no way im sending my current PC in it's place :)

It's basically saying there isn;t enough space to install windows.

I would do what mike breck suggested if you don't need to save any data , you can wipe the drive using many differnet utilites. You can use Wipe/Zap from http://www.bootdisk.com or you can use delpart. You can obtain delpart here >> http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.exe

fudtone: I delete the parition and created a new one when I originally went to format, then had to restart which has caused these current problems.

cipher: cheers mate, i'll try them programs later on, currently trying to get Windows ME installed on the harddisk from my old Windows 98 - If I can get that up and running I can sort the problematic disk without worrying about timing.

As we don't know what is on the HD (could be a Drive Overlay software), I recommend that you take out the HD and see what brand it is.

Then go to the HD manufacturer's Website (Google search will find the site) and download their Zero Wipe (also called Low Level Format) utilty and wipe the HD.

For example Quantum/Maxtor HDs use a program call PowerMax and Westrn Digital use Data Lifeguard.

BTW if using a Bootdisk, you should choose "Boot computer with CD ROM support" - this will load the drivers for the CD-Rom so you can start the installation as per the link that was given to you in your last post.

Also some Me CD-Roms are bootable. Which means that you don't need a Bootdisk. You just set the Boot sequence in bios to CDROM first. Reboot the PC with the Me CD in the CD-Rom drive, change to the WIN98 folder, and you can fdisk and format from the CD.
