XP Upgrade

Hey guys. I'm considering upgrading to WinXPpro for the system in my sig. Is it worth it?

What OS are you running now?

If it is W2000, then the answer would be no. If it is W9x, then the answer is yes.

Agreed... if you're on Win9X... ya, it's a great upgrade... if you're on Win2K... then maybe, maybe not... I prefer XP over 2K, but that's just personal opinion.

Also, unless you need support for multi processors or logging into a domain, save yourself some money and get XP Home.

win 98. Will I notice a performance change or is it mostly just a security thing.

It's just a better overall system. I do notice that it boots faster and such... no crashes or lockups... no memory leaks requiring you to reboot all the time, etc.

What about networking? I have four comps networked and I have heard that XP home is a pain in the butt for networking.

I have XP Home networked to a ME machine, a 95 laptop, and my Linux server.... never had a problem with it and I feel the claims are unfounded.

I prefer loading XP on other people's PC's but I prefer using 2000. 2K doesn't nag me as much. Compared to 98, XP is a dream.

Networking is pretty easy with XP. Things are just a little different. I have networked many XP machines, some within a domain, some in my home in a setup like Hal's. Actually I just replaced ME on my wife's computer with XP. She likes it better and it is certainly more stable.

Fo me the restore function of XP is worth the upgrade from WIN98. Plus the stability is better.

its xp pro thats a pain in the butt to network we had a 8pc network 3 with win98 4 with xp home and 1 xp pro to set up
the win98 and xp home computers all worked grate with full acces to all computers except the pro the pro computer coud reed all the other computers but none of the others coud acces the pro computer untill we set up permishons and stuff in the security policey section of xp pro

Thanks for the imput guys. One more question. I have heard a lot about Win2000 not working very well for games. Does XP have the same problem? I have actually thought about switching to 2000 before because a lot of the 3D programs that I want to be able to use require it, but I don't want to lose my game compatability. Thanks for the help! :D

In a nutshell, if the game will not work under NT then it will not work under XP, there are ways around all of these, some more strenouos than others(compatabilty mode etc). The question is do you really still want the game? I found that in all but one case (MS Close Combat 1) any game I could get instaleld was so crazy fast that it was not playable anyway. Besides the graphics ... well they were hot at the time....

If these old games are an issue for you go for the dual boot, 98 for the old stuff and xp for stability.

As for games differences between home and pro, I do not beleive there is any difference betwen the two, pro just lets you use dual cpus and get into domains.

Personally I'd go for the Home version, get the oem full version from newegg for 93.00 (I am now up to 11 reboots/freezes since I installed XP home back in 11/2001 that I do not know why it happened - there are a few more but I know why - UE)

No, I don't mean older games. I was worried about games in general. Like games made after Need For Speed III.

but keep in mind that it is not designed to play games on,

So andy, basically what you are saying there is that windows xp pro worked fine with all the computers after the security permissions were setup?? I dont see a problem what so ever with having to go change the security policy. For some computers that has to be done. Quicksilver... go with windows xp pro

Xp pros grate if you know what you’re doing if you have never had to deal with security and permissions and stuff then be prepared for a bad hair day
