1gig of Ram

Will i be able to tell a difference from 512meg to 1gig of memory in windows XP? Is it worth the upgrade?

You are pretty much doubling your RAM, so I would think you would really notice a difference. You can really test this if you run intensive software. But, I can't say for sure. The highest RAM count I have had is whats in my signature. :D But in theory, yes you should notice a bit of difference.

Unless you are running a whack load of memory intensive apps... I highly doubt you will really notice anything.

Tis true, right now, unless you are really doing a lot of apps that dont quite fall in the realm of desktop apps you arent going to notice any difference. At this stage (512MB), RAM amt is hardly your bottleneck.

If you are getting into video editing (or some other intensive program such as CAD), I would recommend upgrading to 1 Gig - but for you ever day use it wouldn't be worth it.

This is very open ended, but I saw a post on more RAM, but it was saying that you had to config something for XP to see that much RAM.
Of course I dont know what to config. I have 512, but hardly ever use more then 300 something. You can ck it in performance monitor
START-PROGRAMS-ADMIN TOOLS-PERFORMANCE.
You will have to ADD+, the different counters, for memory processor, etc...

All nt family os's will use a gig o' ram and more, automaticly.
I do have a question regarding the cpu cache tho. If xp installs expecting 256 kb, does it notice if you change to a cpu that has 512, and adjust accordingly?

When I upgraded from a 1.7Ghz Celeron with a 128 kb L2 to a P4 2.53Ghz with a 512 kb L2, XP picked the change right up. It didn't give me any problems at all.

yes the 512 L2 cache is faster than 128

It's not necessarily faster itself, but more cache can increase overall system speed by having more data cached. You want everything to be in cache, so the cpu doesnt have to reach too far to get the data. Some new cpus have like a meg of cache running at 3gig. Nice. There are older cpus that have a meg too, slot2 xeons often had a meg running at the core cpu speed. A dual mobo with xeons running at 933 or so, with a meg of cache each, would be a fine box indeed.
Anymore ya gatta have cash to get cache.

Since ther eis this post, I use lots of director 8, pinnacle studio 8, should I benefit from that type of upgrade. Now I have two 512 DDRr226. Motherboard has four slots up to 4gb DDR

Yes, video apps will love more ram. That is unless the ram you have now satisfies the needs of the apps. More is better, usualy.
