How to copy disk image from 80G disk to 40G disk?

I have a Windows XP computer with a Western Digital 80G hard disk. I plan to replace the 80G disk with a Seagat or Western Digital 40G drive. The 80G disk will be reformatted and used for another computer.

How can I copy the image from the 80G hard disk into the 40G disk?

With Norton Ghost you would be able to do a 'Disk Dump' to your new hard disk. The only thing I can see would be a problem is if the full 80 gigs were full. Because then you are trying to squeese it to a 40gig. See how much is actually used, and if its considerably less than 40gig you should be okay. I'm sure other people might have some suggestions on some other software that might do the same job, but cheaper. I'm sure you get the idea thought.

WD's Data Lifeguard tools includes a program that will allow you to copy the old disk to the new one.

Dumb question: does WD DL work only with WD HDs or with any other brand?

WD DL will work if there is at least ONE WD drive in the computer - or at least it used to. Other manufacturers have similar software.

A few years ago, I used WD DL to clone a Seagate to a Maxtor - I temporarily put a WD drive I had in as a third drive and didn't touch it.
