I want to be able to have my pc turn on when I flip the switch on my surge protector. How do I set 98 to not completely power down on shutdown?

i dont think you can if you turn off the surge protector then you have cut power to the computer and it will shutdown

If you want to try a "suspend" or "sleep" mode, like andy says, you can't turn the power off: it still needs a little power to maintain those modes. And you'd still need to move your mouse slightly to "wake" the computer from "sleep". [This happens fairly quickly, though = mostly depending on how long your monitor takes to warm up to normal from power-saving]

I think if I can get the computer to shutdown to the screen that reads "OK to turn off computer now" or something of that nature then Ill be able to flip off the surge protector. Then when I flip it back on the computer will automatically turn on without having to push its power button. I just cant figure out how to get it to shutdown to that screen.

That screen is from the AT power supply days. If a mainboard is ACPI compliant, and they pretty much all are now, the ATX power supply is cut as part of the shutdown process, via the motherboard. I don't know if it will work, and it might cause more trouble than anything else, but I suppose you could disable Power Management (ACPI) - but then you risk having trouble with IRQs and such. That might get you the "OK to turn off . . . " screen. I suppose you could try it, and just reverse your changes if it doesn't work.

when you get the ok to turn of screen you cant restart windows from it all you can do is use the power switch to turn the computer off .
all so i am just curios as to the reason you dont want to use the power on button on the computer

The desk is not a very good one, the tower will only fit in an odd spot and it would be convenient if I could just have everything power on when I flip on the surge protector. Then I would only have to break my back to throw a CD in now and again.

do you have any expereance with building computer as the best way to solve your problam is to move the computer power switch from the case and put it on the desk all you do is find the wires from the back of the switch cut them and join them with some moor wire to make it longer then tape the switch to the desk wher you can reach it.
