Hello have a micron i put togather for my mother running ME and everything was working fine untill now,When you go to shutdown and click ok the screen goes black and computer does not turn off? Any of you gearheads out here know how to fix this issue?

I have had this 'hitch' a few times in 3 years-----never really discovered why it happens, just figured something got jumbled in the 'shutdown path' during normal usage...

If its a real old keyboard, you may want to try a newer one just to rule out a 'stuck key' or woren-out components...

I just run "regclean", then goto Accessories/System Tools and run "clean", "standard scan", and finally "defrag" and problem goes away...

To make sure, I would run Ad-aware to remove spyware and then Antivirus Scan, then do the above!!

Hi all -

All the suggestions above are good ones. Another approach you can also try, if you're still not shutting down after cleaning things up - is to try WinMe's built-in System Restore feature. If this problem shutting down is fairly recent, and you haven't added any new hardware at the same time the trouble appeared - you can boot the PC to Safe Mode, and try restoring the computer to a "restore point" from a date prior to your current shutdown problems. Details are in your "Help and Support" menus under "System Restore". . . If this trouble started just after a software change - try uninstalling that software first, and then running the system restore.

In some cases, it makes for a quick fix.

Check to see if it's a Power Management issue first.

Ccheck if Standby is enabled in Control Panel>Power Management. If it is, then change it to Shutdown.

Set all your other options there to "Never".

Enter the BIOS (CMOS Setup) and disable any Power Management options there.

If that doesn't affect the problem, then you can look at the other causes.

Buy windows xp update and update. I had that problem. Windows ME has trouble with keeping the system clean as far as i know. IT is also a very slow boot. I would recommend getting windows XP.
