Couple of 98se problems

Well, it took me three attempts, but I finally got my dual boot XP/98se to work. Now I've got a couple of minor things to correct and could use some help. How do I disable the Password sign on for networking on 98? The screen comes up whenever I start 98. I don't use a password so clicking either OK or Cancel has the same effect. Second question: 98 keeps trying to load a driver for my onboard sound, but I don't use the onboard cuz I've got an Audigy soundcard installed and working and I don't want them conflicting with each other. I tried to delete the onboard in the Device driver, but it comes back on every restart.

Hi Panama Red,

Going from memory on the logon: Go into Network Properties and in the millions of tabs and options is a choice for logons. Pick the Pick the standard Windows logon (not the network one or the like). When it prompts you for a password, just leave it blank and the next time you boot, you won't be asked. This works whether you're on a home network or not.

Some mobos require a jumper to be set / unset to disable onboard sound, so if you can't find it in the BIOS as bailey mentions, then it should be on the mobo.

Thanx guys, the bios solved the sound problem (duh) and the Network logon problem was based on which Logon was selected. The two choices were Microsoft Client and Windows. It had been set to Client so I changed it to Windows and Voila! Now two more that I over looked. I still have one device not identified in device manager. It's listed under"Other devices" and is listed as "PCI Universal Serial Bus". All my USB devices are working, so I'm not sure what this is referring to. Second, and this is weird. When 98 Starts, my desktop background shows up, the MS music plays, the mouse pointer w/hourglass shows and then when the hourglass times out everything just stops loading. I do a double Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart and the second time it loads fine. Any Ideas?

The USB listing is probably for USB 2.0. Win98 has native support for USB 1.1, but not 2.0 and will require a driver. Your motherboard probably does not have Win98 driver support.

And that could be your startup problem, too! I had the same problem with my old A7V333 and no matter what I did, I had the same symptoms. Then, when a new driver release came out for USB 2.0, I installed it and the problem when away...

It wasn't the USB driver Rails, I found the problem. Looked closed in msconfig/startup and found a second entry for Load Power Profile (Rundll.32) Don't know how I got 2, but I unchecked one and the problem is gone!! Happy Days. Just a bit of info. Last time I tried to set up this dual boot, I did encounter the "not enough memory" error message. Expected it because I'm running 1Gb of ram. This time I set up the system with only 512Mb installed, added the appropriate lines to the Vchache setting, and reinstalled the other 512Mb when I reconnected the XP HDD. This Mobo has a great feature, too. When the Splash screen shows, just hold the Esc key and it will display the boot options just like in bios. The XP hdd is the default, so unless you know how to get to 98, it will always start in XP. Makes it safer for the wife and daughter getting on this machine. Thanx for all the help guys. Feels kinda good to set up a dual boot a little differently from the normal dual boot configuration and have it work!! Enjoy the long weekend.

In the Network part of Control Panel, click the drop down and select Windows Logon instead of Microsoft Client
