I have a scanner that worked fine on my old PC (that ran with Windows 2000). That PC broke and I have a brand new one which runs with Windows XP.
I've tried installing my scanner, but none of the USB ports will notice its there. I've made sure that all the ports are enabled, but it still wont work.
I'm not all that great with this kind of stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ikari104,
Welcome to PC Mechanic !! :D
Most scanners require that the software be installed Before hooking up the scanner to the computer. Did you install the software that came with it? Also, you may need to go to the manufacturer's Web site and download newer, XP drivers.

is the scanner plugged in a turned on?
sounds like a simple mistake, but if i had a nickle for everytime I made it i'd have a whole lotta nickles.
or is it USB powered?

Have you tried other USB devices to make sure the ports work?

If it is a Visoneer or Umax Scanner > Lots of luck> both of those companies take the attitude of why support an older unit when they can just buy a new one when they upgrade.
not important

I have a Visioneer scanner. When I upgraded to XP it was a total nighmare to make it work.
I finally located an update to download. As strange as it may sound, I have to install the update before I install the software to make it work.

I did get the update and had it installed. then tried the scanner. No luck.
I don't have any other USB devices either to try it..
The thing is, when I plug/unplug the scanner from the USB ports the computer makes a 'beep' sound. So I figured it knows there is something there, but won't realise what it is.

You need to eliminate the system or the scanner as the problem. The easiest way, usually, is to just plug in another device -- one that is known as good and working. Can you borrow something from a friend or family?? Something simple like a mouse or thumbdrive?
What model is this scanner?

Hi Ikari104,
In the meantime, you can try uninstalling all the related software and removing the device from Device Manager, the try the following steps:

Using the latest drivers from here:

I have a newer Visioneer and had an older parallel connected one previously. They are really tricky to install. As TwoRails has suggested remove everything. Additionally, I'd recommend you do a search for any Visioneer "left over" files or folders and delete them all. Before you add any software, make sure your scanner is disconnected from the usb port. Don't connect it until prompted and then wait for recognition. HTH
