What type of internet connection do you have? Have you played this game often in the past without this problem and it just now started out of the blue, or was this your first attempt at online game?

i got a 56k. this happens everytime i get online. i've been online many times. it either turns off my internet then goes nonresponding, or reboots. and it always happens after this msg pops up 'warning, connection problem detected'

Not sure about this particular error msg, but it may be due to the fact that your landline just doesn't have the bandwidth to allow you to play 1942 online. I know my connection is slow that it's impossible for me to play even TeamFortressClassic or Quake2 online. Never had it cause my computer to reboot tho...
What kinda modem you got?
It may be possible to play 1942 online with a 56k modem, but you'll need a damn fine modem and should probably stick to smaller servers (24 players or less imo).

That error is just a warning that your Latency has gone too high. I am running on cable connection, and I sometimes get that message on servers I join that are high ping to me. The game looks like it freezes, and then eventually it gives me a kicked from server message and boots me to game selection. The best advise I can give you is to join games with low ping to you, preferably with a green light, and with few people. The game servers can be set up to boot high pings from their games. This may be whats happening to you.

IT could also be 1.45, lotta lotta lotaa errors reported so far. I think theres a 1.45 update out right now that fixed many of the bugs.
