Can anyone tell me why Internet Connection Sharing automatically turns itself off after installing it then rebooting the system?

I have a server with DSL on a 98 machine that works great even when sharing. But when I try to setup ICS on the ME machine, everything looks fine until I try to load IE6.

The I get the added surprise when I look at the ICS option under "Connections" in add new programs of ICS not being chosen as an option.

Then I get to start all over again with no luck.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I'm really, really, rusty at ICS, but seems I remember that you only need to install the ICS on the "server" machine, and then create floppies for the other machines that will share the connection, then just install the "client" portion from the floppy - I believe all the details were in a ".chm" format file that you can probably reach through your Help menus.

I may be reading your post wrong: it just sounds to me like you installed ICS as the server on both machines, which I don't think will work.

I've seen folks set up ICS only on one machine, then simply enter Internet Opitons on the other Win9x machines on their network, and set the "Connection" tab to "LAN" and auto-detect. They don't install any ICS at all on the client machines. Just clicking on their IE shortcut then works.

Best of luck

try this 3rd party software called proxy.
as much as I try to stay away from 3rd party programs, ICS can be bothersome. this program helped me to connect 4 computers (with 3 different os) to the internet via one server.
read about it and get it here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm
