Recently re-partitioned and reformatted a drive for a friend, when he brought the box round containing all the cd's his WinME was missing. Checked his old invoice(2years) and it was included but seems to have gone missing.two questions:
1. can i put my WinMe on which i'm not using as i now use XP, until he finds his.
2. When he finds his CD is there a registry tweak to change the person and product Id without re-installing windows.
Doug
If that copy of WinME is installed on only one computer, it should be legal.

Yeah RayH is mostly right if you do only install it on one system it should be legal. And no, I dont believe there is any way to change product keys after install. sorry. But one more thing, Im not exactly sure why you'd even consider installing Me, its a shoddy OS that was released too early, so it had and still has a bunch of bugs. I'd use an updated version of 98se or an install of win2k or xp.

Can't remember having done it with ME, but previous versions accept a registry key change with no problems. Change the CDkey and the product ID changes.

just get him to give you his cd and product key when he finds it and he keeps yours

andyms18a gave the easiest thing to do, but yes you can change the product key in the registry. It should be under Hkey local machine/software/microsoft/windows/highlight current version and scroll down to it.
