I'm relieved because I just bought a 9600pro and I was debating over that or the 5600 ultra.

There was a comparison somewhere, best fps for the price, 9600 was the winner by far.

I'd almost forgotten this till I got an e-mail reminder.
If you ever hear that Carmack and Newell originally found NVidia FX cards good remeber this ( especially when someone brings up that Doom III benchmark from May ).
Update 09/06: We also emailed Gabe Newell from Valve Software about his experience with Pixel Shader Performance:
GD: We've started some initial DX9 Shader tests, and have seen, so far that NVIDIA NV3x hardware has a hard time.. Will it'll be similar w/ the HL2 Benchmark?
"Yep."
Gabe Newell
Update 09/05: We emailed id Software guru, John Carmack about his experience with NV3x hardware on Pixel Shading performance, and this was his reply:
GD: John, we've found that NVIDIA hardware seems to come to a crawl whenever Pixel Shader's are involved, namely PS 2.0..
Have you witnessed any of this while testing under the Doom3 environment?
"Yes. NV30 class hardware can run the ARB2 path that uses ARB_fragment_program, but it is very slow, which is why I have a separate NV30 back end that uses NV_fragment_program to specify most of the operations as 12 or 16 bit instead of 32 bit."
John Carmack
This is from Gamer's Depot.
If it took Valve 5X as long to code for NVidia I have a good idea of why Doom III won't turn up till next year.
NVidia isn't just a danger to itself.

if for once its true that ATI made a card that blows the doors off nivida (and I belive they have) )then its good for everyone. All industry needs compition.
personaly I have a ATI in a box that I used for a month (7700 64mg I think) its was a POS and I couldnt send it back.
My old nivida might not be the fastest but it never gave me any trouble.
ATI drivers always seem envasive (I have another one in another mechine) I was pulling chucks out for a year after the uninstall on this mechine.
It impresses me how nice ATI can draw a picture but when you want that picture to change to fit your needs it is not as flexable. A little light here a little light there, tweek a nivida's drivers and enjoy.
For now well done ATI!
Nivida keep that presure on you will again be the big dog!
(cringes at thoughts of 3dfx)

Oh yeah, competition.
NVidia dropping the ball like this is in no gamer's best interest.
My experience, starting in the fall of 2000, was with the first of the radeons.
The 32mb ddr was a winner for me as a general purpose card.
Yes I play games but I have alot of word processing stuff to do along with DVDs ( yes, I've watced DVDs on my comp fpr the last 3 years and ATI was spectacular ). It was perfect and it was no problem to pick ATI again.
But I did get a few gamers, way back then, and the 4200 worked great.
So now, NVidia seems to be finding various expensive ways to s...w up.
I want to be their 4th grade teach restoring order, your basic map of how it works. It's clear they've forgotten.
STOP THIS NONSENSE !!!!

They got it right once, and they've been making up for it ever since.
Thery're supposed to be the loyal opposition, not the s..ew ups.
I'm not being idealistic.
The market I have to buy from needs the competion.
One company means the rest of us get scammed, with no recourse.
