will a radeon 9600pro with a 2.5ghz athlon xp (w/512 dual-channel RAM) be able to run HL2 at high frame rates with all the features on high? would a 9500pro have run better?

Reviews were just released showing that the Radeon 9600 Pro was a great card for playing HL2 (as compared to nVidia based cards), so you shouldn't have any problems.

The radeon will run it with no trouble.

FantasySoul,
No maybes this time.
Heres the midnight benchmarks from Anandtech : http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1863
He's being "diplomatic" but the problem is the architecture of the chip and no driver fixes are gonna get NVidia out of this one.
The 50 Dets do things like removing fog in scenes, cheating on screen chapter photos, and using various optimizations that trash the game. Which is why Newell won't recommend them.
Considering how much trouble NVidia is in they should simply have scrubbed this generation of cards, said "sorry", and gone back to the drawing board. It couldn't have been anymore expensive that way then it's going to be now.
