Okay guys these are the minimum specs and the info came from Carmack and Newell.
minimum

HL 2 :
800 MHz cpu
128 mb ram
DX6 based card ( TNT2, Voodoo 3, integrated video.)
Newell swears the game will run.
It might not run all that well but it will run.

Doom III
1 GHz cpu
256mb ram
GF 1 or 7xxx Radeon
Same deal as above.

The original thread for this is stickied at Gamespot and vouched for by their editors.

If you want to do it well my guess is that a 1.4 Ghz:p or higher cpu and 512mb of ram and a Geforce 3 is basic and anything over that is gravy ( I will be saved by my 9500 pro ).
I'm just going to have to wait for that AMD 64, and accompanying mobo, to get down to my price level.
Then, playing on line will get really interesting.

I guess that puts me over the limit, but I thought the specs would be more of a hassle.

Does seem like a very low Minimum.... I hear that HL2 does very well, however, on lower end systems. I hear it runs good, but you just don't get all the eye candy effects...

The operative word is scaleable.
If you want the game in it's full immersive glory the minimum specs won't cut it but the company, for good reason, want's to sell the game to as many people as possible.
Which, I suspect, is why Newell didn't just tell NVidia to take a hike ( I mean the guy was really angry. That shader conference thing was payback. ).
I'm expecting something like what turned up NOLF1 where if you really had the hardware there were super-settings you could use.
Then it required at least a 750 MHz cpu, 256mb ram and a 32mb video with T&L.
Oh, yeah. Back in the day.

www.gamespot.com has an impressive demo of the game engine for HL2. It's not playable. It's more of a high res movie. I checked it out today and all I can say is WOW!

Yeah, I've seen it and "WOW!" is right.
