I know this has been done in the past but it may be insteresting to see how the figures have changed.
I chose DSL because that is what I have now, but my cable goes in next week.

Wow, No Dial-up yet. I didn't realize broadband was being adopted that well.

It's just that nobody is willing to admit to having dial-up! :D

I was tempted to use 2 cans and a string, which would have been accurate if I was at home (really antiquated phone lines), but I'm in college, and they give me this wonderful invention they call Cable.

bought ameritech dsl before they hooked up with yahoo to become sbc yahoo dsl. luckily we were grandfathered in and did not have to change anything from our previous configuration. i have to say that i hate sbc yahoo though from my friends houses it is horrible

I have SBC Yahoo DSL and the key is to do away with their bloated software and browser and just use the PPPoE client to connect and then IE for the browser.
They have some crappy connection manager software that slows the connection WAY down, and that Yahoo companion browser whatever thing just plain SUCKS.
I uninstalled everything and installed just the Enternet 300 software and the performance was better.
I eventually got real tired of waiting for the thing to connect after rebooting the computer so I went to a NAT router with its own PPPoE client so it stays connected even if I reboot.
Of course I am only 4,100 feet from my CO so I always get around 1300 - 1400 download speeds.

that is awesome. i am trying to get a friend of mine to get a router for that very reason. it took me forever to convince her to get rid of the yahoo software (it also took me forever to convince her that she needed more than 64mb ram, so...). everything is running fine now, but you're right it is a hassle to wait for it to connect.

Gunrunnerjohn you got it ! :D
But I hardly see any dial up problems being posted recently, so who knows ? Maybe cable is taking over. Any " voluntary" poll is flawed - only by visiting homes randomly and checking could the truth be known.

I see what you mean. There have been 104 views and only 23 votes :(.
Do you suppose those other 81 are the dialups or the two cans and a string?

DSL here. It came to my area before Cable did!!! I was going to go with a second phone line because I had dail up which created the obvious phone use problems, but DSL turned out to be cheaper!!

What is WiFi???
Sorry for my ignorance.

I currently have Dial-Up (unfortunately), but I hope to convince my mom to get DSL because SBC has DSL for $30/month for a year, so maybe it will happen.

wireless will eventually connect to a wired internet connection, either cable, dsl, or even dial-up

Actually it has. Executives where I work get all the neat toys. When they are remote, they plug in a PCMCIA cellular card and bam, they be on the net anywhere they can pick up a signal.
As far as WiFi being a choice on the list, I do not see that fitting this category. WiFi as i know it, is just a way to connect to an existing network connection. For instance for me I have cable, so I connect a wireless access point to the router that is connected to the cable modem.

My connection to the Internet through my ISP is wireless and yes at some point it is wired beyond the server at the ISP, but still it is an option to connect.

So what equipment you use to make use of the service you are paying for?
lil Jimmie
09-18-2003, 05:38 PM
Fixed Wireless ISP (http://www.homenethelp.com/sharing/fixed-wireless.asp)
My ISP or WISP provides the equipment which I believe to be Cisco and my speeds run around 1Mb up and down. DSL is very limited in my area and cable has just become available in some areas of town. Right now fixed wireless is the fastest of the three in my area.

cool lil jimmie, didnt know about wisp... well i guess i did but haven't heard about it for awhile and just forgot. thanks for the info!
Earthlink DSL 768/128. It was the first available affordable broadband.
We do have an excellent wireless ISP here, but it's pricey.

WISP are becoming more and more popular, especially with the advent of lower cost hight bandwidth data pipes.
I have seen this in place in condo/apartment complexes, where an ISP comes in and "wires" the whole complex with a mix of wired jacks (using long reach ethernet) and general wireless coverage (Cisco AP's are the most popular as they offer the widest range of management controls like bandwidth throttling etc), then roll it all back to a leased high speed cable or SDSL line out to the internet.
this set up gives the most bang for the buck with the least amount of capital outlay.

Dialup. No other choices in my area.

In "x" amount of years, something like that can be incorporated in the rent and having a network connection is just part of life.
Yes there are people still not connected, and I would like to keep it that way. My parents for one.

Yeah, I bet virus writers and spammers would like nothing more than a bunch of semi-computer-illiterate people plugging into broadband connections around the world.
Come to think of it, ISP tech support would probably hate it even more! Those poor people deal with enough idiots (myself included), let's not make them suicidal.

Too late! I am not suicidal, but I did commit homicide on a box fan!!
Too many people that cannot find the "Any Key" on the keyboard that day!!!

Wow, alot of cable. Do you think that so many people are going to get cable that it will be really slow? The folks at comcast (cable provider) here say that the more people on at once in an area the slower the connection is...ive had 4-5 people in my neighborhood (including me) taking huge amounts of bandwith for xbox online games, it doesns seem to cause any problem.

those 81 people voted too, but they are on dial up... there vote will get posted in about a week since its still uploading...
I had cable this month but had some problems as most people who vist #PCMECH on IRC already know ;)
So I'm on dialup right now... It was very easy to get used to cable but having to go back to dialup really sucks... I dont even like connecting anymore... Everything seems to take ages to load.
