i have a dial up motem on a 2nd line. it usualy drop's it's connection overnight when i leave it connected to the internet, i run a compaq presaro 5000t, win xp. when it kickes me off the internet, sometimes it doesn't detect a dial tone when i try to reconect. i have to unplug the phone cable from the wall and then the motem will disconnect inside the puter. when it doesn't detect a dial tone, i can pick up the phone on that line and it sound's like the phone is off the hook. i'd like to stay connected to the internet, sence it's another line and only disconnect when i'm gone.when i org. bought the puter it came with win. me, and i upgraded to win xp and downloaded the xp drivers for the modem. under myn device manager it list the modem as a pctel platinum v.92, and the driver is from compaq per s/n of the puter and it's for win xp. tks sling

It won't stay connected all night, especially with no activity; the ISP will boot you off (even with activity some ISPs have a time limit for a continuous connection). The modem isn't releasing the line after that so can't reconnect (and no dial tone on phone). Kinda like leaving a phone off the hook all night and trying to use it the next day. Gotta hang up first.

Without unplugging the cord when ready for reuse, hit ctrl alt del and select RNAAPP, end task. That should release DUN.

2 things you should do if you want to stay nailed up - first is toss that PCTel software modem and replace it with a US Robotics 2977 hardware modem, and set your e-mail program to check for new mail every 5 minutes to keep activity on the line. This still won't avoid disconnects if the ISP has a hard disconnect after so many hours, but the hardware modem should properly release the line when it does disconnect. Make sure you set the dialup to reconnect on disconnection.

sling,i noticed you're located in colo.that's Qwest country,right? try asking for a different dial-up number(local of course,no long distance) my understanding,they have gone through some changes on thier end,it affected me as well in new mexico,i used to lose connection as well,new number= 0 disconnects.
