OK I'm sort of getting tired of Windows 98 so I picked up the XP Pro upgrade. I just don't know if I should reformat and install again from scratch. I know it is probably better but if I just install over 98 then I don't have to reinstall all of my programs. I have only had this build 3 weeks so it is still relatively clean.

Also: How is the install process different from 98? Do I need a boot disk or can I boot from the install cd?

I recommend a clean install, you might get lucky, but most have had issues with the upgrade.

For a clean install just boot to the cd and follow the directions it pretty simple really. During the clean install you will be able to partition and format your drive with either FAT32 or NTFS. I recommend NTFS and with the upgrade the file format will stay FAT32.

If I use NTFS will it still be compatible with the FAT32 machines on our LAN?

I'd go with (and did) a fresh install. It's too easy for an over-the-top install to keep / leave problems on the system.

You should have no problems, file systems have nothing to do with network shares. Well NTFS does when it comes to permissions but 98/Me will be able to see the shared files over the network.
