If I start my computer with any CD already in the drive, it doesn't recognize that there even is a drive. THe drive icon isn't even in "My Computer". If I take the CD out, start back up, then put a disc in, it reads fine. Is this common?

I sees it as an error with the device and temporally disables it. If, for example, you forgot to plug in your keyboard and your bios is set at continue even when error is located. your system will boot up but your keyboard will not work. This will occur with all devices that are not required to run the pc, like your hard drive.

Do you think it is anything I can fix myself?
Don't start the computer with a nonbootable CD in the drive.

maybe your mobo has some kind of option in the BIOS, but other than that jsut dont leave cds in your computer.
