Why did the price on a 120GB 8Mb Cache SATA 7200 RPM Maxtor (thats the one im looking at) from $130 to $108 in 2 weeks?

Seems like many key items have had price reductions on many comp parts sites. Think they are trying to stimulate more business in this tuff economy.

at frys they are selling a maxtor 160gb for 97 bucks.i may have to get one

Also because newegg is always adjusting their prices. I, for example, planned out all my PC parts to order and totalled it up. Then about 5 days later i actually ordered them to find, to my pleasant surpise, that the new total was about $85 cheaper than my previous total (which was somewhere around $1200).

i wish prices would go down for smaler HD's like 20 gig... i need one for my parents comp and theyll probably never need ore then 5 gig but i dont want to pay $40 for that little amount...

Prices on hard drives drop quite quickly after they have been out for a few months. Newer faster drives get premium dollars but a short time after there are two or more manufactures making the same type drive the price drops quickly.
I wouldn’t expect to see a big drop in 20 gig 3 ½ inch drives, don’t know if anyone is even making them any more as most manufactures are now getting at least 40 gigs on one side of the disk.

One factor could easily be that more people are buying them, helping to drive down the costs. My last 4 personal HDs have all been PATA due mainly to the cost difference. Now there is very little, if any, price diff, so my next drives will be SATA, which will help to drive the costs down even more, and the cycle continues...

After my lousy expierences with Maxtor, nothing short of them giving away the drives would urge me to get one anytime soon...Although even on Wd's and Seagates I've seen some pretty noticible price drops...

Maxtor's are a good drive. Maxtor and WD are considered the best two choices by many forum members. I've used Maxtor drives virtually exclusively for many, many years and have never had a problem.

ya, my friends dad is like the SCSI design manager for Maxtor or something pretty high. He just gave his son 2 250 GB drives for nothing, and hes 12 years old!
