Home network with DSL

I've set up numerous home networks before. It was always simple: plug each computer into the router, plug the router into the cable modem, make sure TCP/IP is installed on all the computers, and voila! every computer can connect to the internet.

However, I'm trying to set up one now but the connection is with a DSL modem, not a cable modem (specifically, SBC DSL) and they have this stupid installation CD that comes with it and it's proving to be trickier than I thought.

Can anyone help me out?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it installed an additional local area connection and the device name is Efficient Networks Ethernet P.P.P.o.E. Adapter

Assuming the router supports PPPoE...

Get rid of their software, it's not necessary. Go into the PPPoE setup in the router and put in username/password, and it should connect.

The rest is like you've seen before, every computer should be online when it connects and should see each other fine if they're in the same workgroup.

No the router connects by itself and gives the other machines private IP addresses.

I have a linksys befsr81, how do i know if it supports pppoe?

It does. I've never had one so not sure exactly where the setup info is for it, but all recent Linksys broadband routers support PPPoE afaik.

Its at the bottom of the setup page - choose PPPoE as the connection type and it will have a place for entering username and password. Enter it and check "Keep Alive". You need to enter the username in the username@sbcglobal.net format. This should be covered in the router's quickstart card or paper manual. Do NOT, I repeat, NOT install the SBC software on the computers, if you already have, uninstall it all. There are several things it installs - a ton of Yahoo stuff, NTS Enternet 300, Broadjump Client Foundation - and God knows what else. It hooks your computer as bad as AOL.

Think of PPPoE ADSL as just like a dialup - it uses the same type of authentication, username and password. It just connects instantly.

Edit: This assumes that the customer has an existing DSL account that has already been set up. If this is a new install, there is a way to activate the account without using the godforsaken software, post back if you need these instructions.

EXCEPT...

On one of the computers, I had already installed the SBC crap. So I uninstalled it and tried to connect, to no avail.

I can't even access the router from that comp (192.168.1.1). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet controller but still the same problem, I get "Page can not be displayed"

Any suggestions?

Make sure there are no lingering software network adapters from the SBC software. You should only have the NIC listed in device manager, and only TCP/IP, Client for MS Networks, and File/Print sharing in network properties.

Make sure it's set to DHCP (obtain IP automatically).

After a reboot you can run the command "route print" in DOS to see if it's getting an address from the router or not.
