I am running premiere 6.01 on winXP (I just installed the 6.01 update), and am trying to open a MPEG-3 movie file, but it is not recognized. Is there a plug-in for it?

are you sure that it is a video file? according to webopedia, mpeg 1, 2 and 4 are video, but mpeg 3 is audio (mp3). could it be that the file has the wrong extension? someone correct me if i am wrong here, but i don't think that mpeg-3 can be a movie file.

hrm. I checked again and it is an avi with MPEG-3 audio.

In that case, it should open, shouldn't it?

well, yeah, even if it was audio, it should still import it because premiere supports mp3. did you try importing it as audio instead of as video just to trick it into thinking that it was audio? i guess i would try to find a program that would convert it into mpeg2 or 4 and then open it. i assume you can open it in media player to watch? if you can watch it in wmp, than chances are it was just encoded wrong and needs to be made into mpeg2 or 4. hope that helps.

Here's the error message I get:

Unable to open that file.
File uses an unsupported compression format.

Yes, it opens in WMP.

There are only 3 headers that can be imported in premiere. It either has to be a file, folder or project. When you capture off of a camera; that is where you can just get the video or audio.

How would I go about encoding it?

did you take this off of a camera or his it a file that was already on your pc. if you took it off of your camera, which piece of software did you use to capture it? i will look and try to find a prog to help you out.

alright, i have not used this program in a while, but if i remember correctly, there is an option to convert the files. i am at work right now so i cannot check it out. open the file you want and convert it to mpeg 2 or 4. hope that helps

mpeg 2 and 4 or mpeg and avi?

avi is the format for windows and mpeg is defined in those links above. mpeg 2 is what is used for dvd's and uncompressed avi renders a VERY large file format.

Premiere will not open AVI's encoded with Xvid or DivX as they are considered unsupported. And if your AVI has a mp3 layer for it's audio, I can all but assure you that the video codec is either XviD or DivX.

Use TMPEnc or VirtualDub to convert the AVI to a standard codec.

Well that didn't work. I can't create the AVI file because of the FAT32 file size limit :(

Most likely why the AVI you have is encoded with DivX/XviD - very high compression.

You can use those tools to split your AVI (into two or three files) and then re-encode.

hrm...

okay, what I'm trying to do is resize the aspect ratio. Is there a way to do that without converting to the AVI?
