Dead Cmos battery [Archive]

Is there anyone out there that could tell me what would happen if a board that i bought was old enough for the Cmos battery to have run out. Obviously this would stop the system from booting up but would it alter the power switch as regards power to the CPU fan.
Thanks for any advice.

No... it wouldn't prevent the system from booting... all it would do is prevent the BIOS from retaining anything other than the default settings and it wouldn't keep correct time.

Also the computer will stop at the black POST screen and you will see a message like:
Checksum Error Press (Blank) to enter setup or (Blank) to continue.

For me, the new hardware thing pop-up everytime I rebooted so I had a luckey guese and installed a new Battery, Budda Bing Budda Boom ran the thing through new hard ware and has ben good ever since.

BTW- That was the first ever repair I ever had done to a pc.
