I was talking to a friend, and her husband who now owns computer business was once in a band. I was heavily involved in the music biz, both instrumentally and as a DJ. I can think of two other people close to me who went from music to computers.
So, now I'm curious as to how many PCMechians (PCMechites?) did a segue from music to computers?

I grew up playing baritone and trombone. I still pick them up once in a while, but I'm more into my Fender Strat (http://www.neffing.com/pics/albums/userpics/strat.jpg) and behind that in the picture is my Alvarez AD60CK (http://www.alvarezgtr.com/bigguitarspgs/ad60ckbig.html). Both are nice, but I must admit that the Alvarez is a much better guitar. I've had a few people play it, and offer to buy it from me. One of them is a Taylor only (acoustic) player.
On order is a new Marshall amp. :) Just waiting for the local shop to let me know its in.

I started playing the violin more than 15 years ago. I also took up electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic guitar (I have all three), some piano, and various other instruments.

played the trumpet for 14 of my 20 years and after highschool just stopped playing I could play any type of brass instrument but after highschool I picked up a guitar and could never go back. The switch from music to computers is great because I have always had an interest in building an audio workstation to combine the two talents and never had the time or money.

Well my pride and joy is my 71' Gibson SG. I've had for 15 years. i can play bass some piano and bash a drum or two.
My amp is an old Peavy VTM 120 that I've had for 14 years too. Great tube amp. At the time This amp had the same great "chunky" sound like marshall just not the price tag.
I was going to major in music in school realized the only things I could really do with that is Teach or "would you like fries with that".
A friend got me into this computer addiction about 8 years ago and I cant believe I didnt start sooner

Lots of musical computer people here, I see. I am not surprised. I suspect that those of you that say you aren't musicians may have dabbled with an instrument at one time, or probably like to sing. Perhaps it's the mathmatical aspects of music and computers, but I think it's more than that. I like doing creative things with my computer, like building websites. Many of you build your own computers. The enjoyment I feel for music, I also feel when I work on the computer. I think music and computers stimulate the same areas of the brain, so it may be a transition that many of us feel is natural.
It's just something I think is interesting.

i started playing guitar when i was single. i used to play for 3-4 hours a day after work and up to 8 hours a day on the weekends. then i met my wife... that drastically cut into my playing time. then we had a kid and i was only playing about an hour or two a week. so i gave myself a choice between my two favorite hobbies... guitar or computers. i chose computers obviously :D

I'm a "use-to-was" electric bass player. It was soooo long ago, I can't hardly even remember... My father was a pro, I was basically just a jammer. My sister plays the electric guitar, as well as the "tubs" (drums), and some piano.

Yeah man yeah!
I got three acoustic gutars and three electrics counting the bass. An amp for each of the electrics too...
Never made a dime playing, but after 23 years of messing around I can keep myself entertained/occupied pretty well at least.

i started playing piano in the 7th grade. i also play the guitar. i favor guitar over piano... it's not really cool when you try to rock hard with a piano.

My brother-in-law plays lead guitar and keyboard in a band (see sig) and he claims that he's met more women playing the piano / keyboard than guitar. Of course, since you're happily involved, that doesn't matter. :)
I'm still going at the guitar, and loving every moment I get to play.
