I checked around here and didn't see anything to answer my question, so I hope this isn't redundant.

Anyway, I run the website for my union (Kentwood Professional Fire Fighters Union - Local 3174/ www.iaff3174.org) I am curious about copyrights and liability.

I came across a web site a while ago looking for info. That site said that as long as you put somewhere on the front page that it is copyrighted, by whom and the date(s) then it is. I'm not sure if I believe that. It seems to me I would have to register part of the code or something. Because of the purpose of the site, I'm not worried about people using our ideas or linking to it, etc. what I am worried about is someone doing something on a less professional basis.

I was also wondering about disclaimers. We just added a 'kids page' and I have some links to some other 'fun for kids pages' I don't want our union held liable if one of those sites turns into a site that isn't child friendly, I'm sure you've seen/heard of sites that lose the rights to the name and adult sites buy it, etc. I'm not to concerned that it will happen, I just want us to be protected if it does.

I came up with a short little disclaimerhere (http://iaff3174.org/kids/kidspagedisclaimer.htm) that I hope covers us, but I'm not sure if it needs to be done by a lawyer or something.

If anyone has any ideas about this I'd like to hear some other opinions.

Thanks

I'm not a lawyer, but that disclaimer looks like it covers your bases.

You don't have to register something for it to be copyrighted, though if you want to sue you have to register. Generally, once you create something, it is copyrighted.

Here is a website with some info: http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html
