View Full Version : No headphone sound

Why can't I get sound out of my headphone jack on the front of my Liteon drives? Neither my DVD/CD rom nor the CD-RW drive have any sound associated. Both are connected to the sound card and the speakers work ok, just nothing from the drive headphone jacks. Did I miss a connection or some setting I'm not aware of?

I assume you turned up the thumbwheel volume control on the drives, Panama Red? Does your headset work with another device, like your stereo?

I have a creative sound card ( and older one that stops at 4.1 ) and it has different enables for speakers and headphones .
What's the menu for yours ?

Yup, had tried the thumbwheel. No response. Got a good set of headphones too. Even tried another headphone just to be sure. Looked thru all audio settings and can't find anything there either. Reason this came up is because I installed a new CD-RW for a friend a couple weeks ago, and she just told me her's won't work either. That prompted me to test my own and neither of mine work either. Hmmmmmmm. Got me puzzled.

OK, so, 1) no diff using the thumbwheels, 2) the headphones work fine on other equipment, 3) and the CD / DVD work normally otherwise? right?

That leaves only 1) something like the jacks being corroded inside the drives and need cleaned, or 2) that part / circuitry is bad.

Can't think of anything else...

PS: Well, I guess I can think of something else... You made me check mine out, and my brand new Sony DRU500 doesn't work anymore with the headphones.

So, this is the first time I'm not using the audio cable; I'm using "digital" mode. So, maybe that part of the circuit gets cut out if not in analog mode??? How are you running yours?

I'll have to check for sure, but my feeble memory says I have the DVD/CD rom connected to digiatal sound on the Audigy card and the CD-RW connected to the analog. The Liteon drives come with an analog cable so I'm sure that's how I connected my friend's burner.

Now that you mention "memory," you've got me second guessing myself.... It's been sooo long since I've had the "Live Drive" in my system, that I can't really remember when the last time I plugged headphones into the drive itself, and not the Live Drive jack... Heck, that could have been several drives ago...

Now I'm wondering if the newer drives only power ear buds or the like, and not full sized, real stereo headphones like mine, and what I'm assuming you are using...

We must think alike. I tried both my full size head set and a mini set, too. Think I'll open the case tomorrow and check the cabling and then see if I can solve this mystery. Thanx for the idea exchange.

If you find anything, I'm dying to hear about it! :) It'll be a while until I get to open mine up and stick in an audio cable.

PS: Under the heading of, "You made me look, again," I just checked one of my other boxes. Same thing. It also has one of my "older" drives in there, and the jack doesn't work.

I am begining to think it's Win XP, however. This other drive, I'm certain, worked before. But... there is one thing I noticed on the two machines I tried: Both play fine using the regular speakers and not the headphones, but the unusual thing is that the drive light comes on, goes off, comes on, goes off..... like it's being buffered into the system. It's not playing (reading) constantly like a music CD does / should. Hence my suspection it's an XP setting somewhere!

Well... the audio cable doesnt' make a difference. Got one in (never physically removed it) in this box, so I just Disabled digital sound on this one drive. Not difference... :(

Still puzzled, TR. My drives are both connected the way I remembered. The DVD rom is connected to the Audigy sound card with a digital cable and the CD-RW drive is connected with analog. Liked your theory about XP being the culprit, so I booted to 98se to see if they work. Still nothing. Speakers work fine as does the mic jack on the Audigy Platinum front panel. Just installed another Liteon burner in an older Compaq running on 98se. I'll try that one for kicks. By the way, the other machine I mentioned early on in this post is a Gateway Essentials running on ME.

Well, so much for an easy culprit of XP, eh? Somehow, though, I still don't think all these drives just crapped out all at the same time...
