win98 networking [Archive]

Problem I have 3 win 98 computers networked together win1 is the main sys. it is the one were the Dail-up connection comes through it has netbeui running and ICS. the other machines win2 and 3 have netbeui running along with ms file and print sharing tcp/ip. the systems see each other fine over the network but some how the internet that was once shared is now not functioning. Whenever you go to IE a dnserror comes up and no page display.improvise adapt overcome

Sounds like you forgot to include a firewall, you have picked up some sort of virus or worm. :)

I am assuming that all of the computers have different names and they are all in the same workgroup or you could not see the others. My experience with ICS and Win 98 has not been good. It does not seem to work very well. I have always had to use a router or switch.

Try hardcoding your ISP's DNS servers into the machines and see if that hepls you route.

Thanks for the advice. I installed NAV 2003 into one of the systems and no virus detected probaly because the 2003 definitions aren't up to date. How would i get these updates packages to put on a system that isnt able to connect to the net?

I'd have a software firewall on the machine before connecting to the net.

Still no internet did a through viruis scan with norton and trojan check with cleaner by moosoft.com zero viriuses or trojans or worms that are defined. system1 is connected the other 2 still no connection.

Pardon me guys, doesn't dialup adapter HAVE to be bound to the TCP/IP protocol before internet connectivity can be established? I don't have any ICS experience, but it seems to me that you need Netbeui to file and printshare and TCP/IP bound to the DialUp Adapter only.

Not sure, but I believe that the DUA can be bound to either TCP/IP or NETBEUI.

The DUN can be connected to either/both TCP/IP and NETBEUI. You only need NETBEUI on the dial-up adapter, I never bind NETBEUI to it.

TCP/IP is the protocol that is "required" to be bound to the dial-up adapter, Not Netbeui. Netbeui is a non-routable protocol. See this article entitled Network Bondage. http://grc.com/su-bondage.htm

Sorry, typed NETBEUI twice! Obviously, the first one was supposed to be TCP/IP!

Have you considered trying an alternative to ICS? When I was sharing internet with software, much success was had with AnalogX proxy ... and I see that <a href="http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm" >it's still available</a>.
To avoid issues, make sure the firewall is not running until it's all setup.
