I just hooked up my router. Do I now install all the software or hook up the wireless adapter to the other computer and set that up first?

I did thatbut i have another problem now. My networking wizared isn't setting up a network. My computer with the wireless adapter says there is no wireless connection. Anybody have any ideas. when I installed the adapter the manual said after the driver was installed a seperate thing would come up, windows wireless zero config, but it didn't. Also I chose to disable the ssid broadcast. Does that do anything? and i changed the ssid from linksys to something else. What how do i know what channel to use. this is so confusing to me.

Why did you change and disable the SSID? I'm not real experienced with wireless but I believe you need that running.

your client card must have the SSID from the router/AP otherwise it will not associate with wireless AP or router. It is like the "secret" password to get into the clubhouse.

In a home/residential environment, you really don't need to worry about which channel to use (just make sure that both the AP and the client card use the same one) as you change the wireless channels to either improve performance or prevent interference from other wireless devices. You use the different channels when you are in an environment where there are multiple access points, on multiple networks, where you "own" only 1 of them. 802.11b has 9 (i think) channels of which 3 (I know this) that are non-overlapping, so if you want to pick one, pick one of the non-overlapping channels to be safest.

OK - let's assume you have the wired computer up and running on the Internet and we only have to get the wireless working. Linksys?

Re-enable the SSID broadcast and disable the WEP security and any MAC filters you have set. The SSID can be anything - and it IS a good idea to change it from the default "linksys". Set the router to channel 6.

The client zero configuration utility should find your SSID right away - and it should connect. To access it, go into your network and dialup connections and right click on the wireless connection.

Once it's connected and working, THEN you can enable WEP and generate keys to give you some security.

I got the wireless connection now but i ran into a problem. The networking wizard won't work. The main computer that I started on has windows ME. I went trough the wizard and put this computer connnects directly throgh the internet. I put the computer name as den, and made a setup disk. I put the disk in the wireless computer and it said it would not run. So I switched and did this computer first. I made a disk and put it in the main puter. It said it set up but it really didn't. I set this computer as running through another computer with the computer name as my computer XP. Can somebody help me or maybe run me through step by step. Also what am i suppose to put for keys on the wireless security and what do I put for passphrase. I'm also sorry for all the similar threads glc. Can i just download the comcast software to the other computer instead of networking the two together because I am getting downloads from windows update right now on the wireless computer, so the internet must be working on the computer

I decided not to network the computers because I didn't know that it would work without doing that. I just have one more question. How do I configure the router so I can play games online for gamespy?

Is there any way to see if my WEP is working properly? Someone I was able to play games on gamespy without configuring anything. Is that suppose to happen?

If you didn't setup WEP passwords on both ends, it's not working. :)

No. That is purpose of router. It assigns IP addresses to connected PC's. If they were the same. there would be no way to route the traffic to correct PC. You wife would be getting pages from your X-rated sites and you would be getting pages from the Cooking show.

It needs to be setup to automatically obtain an IP.
