DSL Router Home Network Setup?

I have one computer hooked up to the net via DSL modem through verizon
my brother is getting and computer and we are going to get a router
do i just hook the DSL modem into the router, and the router into our computers, then install the software verizon gave to us on the other computer, or do i have to make a new network connection? with what specs?
we want to share internet files, and printer connections
if anyone has a tutorial that would be great

You shouldn't have to run the software, as long as the pc(s) are set up on DHCP it should recieve the connection automatically

You will connect the modem to WAN on the router, then connect the router to each of the computers using a straight thru cat 5 cable. I'm not familiar with Verizon, but if you have to dial in to connect, you will set the router for PPPOE and enter your login name and password for the isp. Be sure the router has DHCP enabled as this is what assigns the ip addresses to each computer. Each computer will need to be setup to automatically obtain the IP addresses in the Network properties.

If it's always on, then you should be able to setup the router to just always be on, then, you have to take the computer that was the first one to have the internet, and you go into the router and click Clone MAC Address. Then, you should be able to setup your other computers to connect to the internet through a LAN, and you'll be ready to go. All DHCP means is that the router essentially takes the one IP address that Verizon gave you, and splits it into two without Verizon charging you extra. Saves lots of money in the long run.

Verizon DSL around here is PPPoE, so you do have to configure the router with the name/password of the account and set it to PPPoE for the WAN, that's about the extent of the configuration required.

MAC cloning is becoming less and less necessary - it's not needed for any PPPoE DSL and no longer required for Comcast cable, power cycling the modem will pick up the new MAC, just leave the modem off for 15 minutes.

Yes, Verizon DSL requires a name/password for the service, you program that into the router, setup PPPoE, and away you go. :D

I got everything set up and working except one thing
My computer only sees my computer and not my brothers
But my brothers computer sees mine and his, But they are sharing files.
They are both set to obtain an ip address automatically, they share the printers fine but my computer can't see his for shareing files.

Check that both computers have NETBIOS over TCP/IP enabled in TCP/IP advanced properties. Also, he has to have File & Print sharing enabled for you to see his computer.
