This question gets asked a lot. You can find more detail in many threads but the run down is as follows:
Get a Linksys Router (preferred to get a wireless one) so the option is there
Get two Cat5 cables
Plug the cable modem into the router
Then plug the two PC's into the router
Done

This router http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=DI%2D604 is on sale for 24.99 right now. They just dropped the price. I've got that router and it works great.

How does wireless work? My 2 computers are 3 floors away, can they still connect?

Check the router specs for the range. I personally use the SMC7004VBR. It's a wired router and I use cat 6 cables. Wiring the netowrk was easy since there is already a path around the house for it.

Thats a long way. A lot of things beside distance affects wireless. Cordless phones, wiring in walls, motors turning on and off, microwaves, ect. A repeater or signal booster between the two floors may help. If you want to try wireless, get a router that also has wired ports. That way if you cain't get wireless to work you could add wiring then.

You don't have to go wireless, for like you said all your stuff is grounded. But the reason I suggest it is that wireless is becoming so popular and if you get something that can connect wireless the option is always there. But then it also brings in extra overhead you need to learn about. If you don't establish basic security on it, anybody with a wireless nic can use your broadband. In the end the choice is always yours.

Heres what I find
D-Link DI-614+ AirPlus Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Router with Built in 4-Port Switch
Does this one work with wired too? And I need an adapter right?
D-Link DWL-650+ AirPlus Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Cardbus Adapter
Is this adapter good enough?
Yes, that's a wireless router with 4 port switch. Yes, that's a good notebook wireless adapter.
