I use one that attaches to the bottom of the hard drive. It does a very good job of cooling. There about $14.

The type that Joeberg mentions is an enclosure for the HDD.

The type I mentioned attaches to the bottom of the HDD with 4 screws. It has two fans.

I used to use these Vantec Drive Bay Coolers (http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/45/30.htm?530) when I was in my crazy cooling phase. The fans are good quality units that move quite a bit of air. The front fan filter is removable for easy cleaning. And it's not too noisy. It's a nice unit for $10.

Just wondering, does it make any noticible difference in performace?

Cooling the hard drive won't improve it's performance...the reason to cool it is to avoid heat related failures or to try and prolong it's lifespan. But I used drive coolers on five 7200 RPM IBM Deathstars and all of them died prematurely anyway.

I know you've made your decision, but I thought I'd throw something at you. If you want to break the bank, take a look at the Zalman passive hdd coolers. They're kinda cool looking, and only 3x the price of the Vantecs (lol). :D

:)

Thanks for the suggestion, Oddjob, but for the price and the little difference it will make in my system doesn't validate the purchase.

I'm using a pair of these (http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=DCD-4002&other_title=+DCD-4002+Cool%20Drive%202) in my linux box to cool my SCSI drives. They work out real nice, and are pretty quiet. HTH
