CPU temperature

Whenever I try to play a game, the Asus Probe says my CPU is overheated, its 50C idle and 80C when playing game, is it too hot? how can I cool it down?

Its way hot......Under load CPU temp should be about 60C .....50C for idle is fine, it shouldnt go up 20C though. take the side off the case and see if it cools down alot. If it does you need to fix your Case fans to push air better.

It only cools down 5C with case off...

Try getting a new heatsink or if you know that your heatsink is good just apply a layer of thermal paste.

have you taken off the heatsink?? and when you did (if you did) did you clean both it and the processor, and applyed a new amount of thermal paste?
if not, what kind of heathsink are you using????

Still I dont see whats the problem, I am using the cooler master aero 4 and I just applyed a new thermal paste yesterday

I think your HSF is still not installed correctly. Are you sure none of the securing clips are broken or that the HSF is still loose/lifting off? 50C idle is not too hot, but I think it should still be lower for a P4. If worse comes to worse, bring your machine into a shop and have someone look at it. I hope they wouldn't charge you to just take a look and advise you.

Does the heatsink move around a lot even though the cam-lock levers are locked down? If it's real loose, the retention ring around the base of the socket is loose.

The heatsink is tight, it wont move even when I push it. any other possibilities?

Is the computer running stable or is it locking up and freezing?

How much thermal compound did you use? You only need a really small amount...just a smear on the heatsink and CPU heatspreader. Too much will act like an insulator and inhibit thermal transfer from the CPU to the heatsink.

It's running stable, and I used the whole stick of thermal paste, is it too much? should I remove it and apply a small amout? and still why do I get 30C+ increase when playing game

If you used all the thermal paste, you used way too much. Take the heatsink off and clean off all the thermal paste from the heatsink and CPU heatspreader. Clean both surfaces with alcohol and then apply just a very small amount to both surfaces...just apply a small amount to cover the heatspreader and the contact area of the heatsink .

Thanks for that help, I jus wiped out most of the thermal paste, and its running at 45-50C full cpu usage, and 35 idel
