Old Drive

I have an old 6 GB Fijitsu hard drive. It's about 4 years old. I have never had a hard drive fail on me before. Even my IBM Deskstar is still running after a year and several months. I don't think my Deskstar is one of the Deathstar dirves though. I plan to copy all of my CD's to the Fijitsu drive. My question is, how much longer does this drive have? I would hate to spend hours copying and organizing music just to have the drive fail a few weeks or days later.

Depends on how much it was used. If you use a hard drive a lot during the course of a week and during the day it will have a shorter life expectancy. If you just used it for email, internet and maybe a game or two every once and a while you should be fine. My hard drive in my old 550 Athlon is still up and running after almost 3 years and it has had a pretty hard life. Just hard to tell for sure sometimes.

I heard that the average HD lasts for about 5 yrs. The oldest drive I have is in my Dell PC. It's 4+ yrs old now and it still works fine. I suggest buying another drive since it seems that prices are going down. I'd check with staples, office depot, etc. for rebates and sales.

EDIT: I think staples has a Maxtor 120GB 7200rpm internal HD for $85 after rebates.

Actually you may be better off going to Best Buy or CompUSA and buying a 20 GB Maxtor or even WD if you feel too worried. Also 6 GB isnt a lot of space when talking about putting a music collection on it. I have a large music collection and it is near 20 GB of my old CD's and songs in MP3 format.
