Does this dvd rom drive read cd's?

A friend gave me an older Creative DVD8401E 8X drive. I can't get it to read any cd's, be they audio or data. It does play dvd's though. Is this normal for this drive? Do most dvd drives read cd's also? I know from some research that it's actually a Samsung drive, other than that nothing.

All DVDs computer drives read CDs. It could be that the laser that reads CD is damaged.
