Linux comes from minix, and is unixlike, not unix

FreeBSD (and *BSDs) are the closest thing to unix (unix is not free). (unix comes from multics)

Anyone care to fill in the blanks ? (it's from the top of my head right now, don't expect much)

By "comes from" i mean it was created to run the applications of that OS + any more the creator/s wanted

That's abvout the long and the short of it.

There really isn't too much different between Linux and Unix. It's easy to run Linux/Unix apps on either platform with a little hacking.

Well. there are some issues running Linux apps on FreeBSD
