Can anyone tell me if any good shareware clones of
Microsoft Word or Excel (97-) exist?
Thanks for any feedback....

Star Office is probably the best bet.

OpenOffice is another. It is free, while StarOffice is not anymore.
Open Office or 602 PC Suite.
I believe that StarOffice is based on Openoffice. BTW- staroffice is free to students, teachers, and educational institutions. It was recently updated to version 7.0.
I use both MS Office and StarOffice where I work. Staroffice is powerful enough for just about anyone but advanced power users. (For instance, it isn't as good at making complex forms that are linked to spreadsheet data).

Open Office 1.1 is free for the downloading. It can read, edit, and be saved as MS Office files.
