A computer came to me with Norton Internet Security(NIS) 2003 installed. NIS was coming up with errrors, so I uninstalled, and reinstalled it. Worked good, until i ran Live Update. After it ran, the computer reboots. Then it was in a perpetual state of reboot. It would only get as far as the welcome screen. I did a system restore from safe mode, and it didn't help. I picked an earlier date, and now it gets into Windows, but locks up right away.

The system is clean of Spyware (or at least it was before the system restore, that probably undid SpyBot's work). The system should be clean of viri, but I cannot be certain. Do you think it sounds like a virus problem? That's what I would blame, but it was working good before the Live Update. Do you think NIS damaged the registry somehow?

I also went through msconfig, and unchecked some unneccesary stuff.

The system was 'tuned-up' before running Live Update, and then it went downhill. Thanks for your replies.

Does it still boot to safe mode? If so, boot with network support and go to http://housecall.antivirus.com and verify that it is virus free.

Failing that.. you may have to do a manual uninstall of NIS. Go to the Symantec web page and do a support search for manual removal of internet secuirty.

HAL9000, thanks man! That manual uninstall seems to have done the trick. I think I will just install the anti-virus part, and skip the Firewall. I'll let the Windows firewall be there instead. Apparently, those two firewalls must clash.

You want a better firewall than what XP offers, trust me.

True that, SARGE. I am taliking him into the advantages of a hardware based(router) firewall.

My own paranoia says use the router (hardware) and something like Zone Alarm for a software. :)

The XP firewall isn't THAT bad - it just doesnt block outgoing. It's no worse than a router firewall in that respect.
