DVD to VHS copy

Hi all,

I want to take part of a DVD (not the whole thing) and copy it to a VHS tape. Now, I'm assuming I'll probably need some software to rip the portion of the DVD I want. I can then use Premiere to edit if necessary, output to my DV cam, which will plug into the VCR to copy onto a VHS tape. Sound ok? Is there any software (preferably free) that allows me to rip part of a DVD? TIA.

You can rip out the video and audio streams with DVD Decrypter. Go to IFO mode, enable stream processing.

The video and audio tracks you strip out can then be edited with whatever you like.

Okay I gave this a shot and have some questions. I can eithe rip it as one big file (audio and video together) or separately. Either way I end up with .VOB files. Is there way to edit a .VOB in Premiere? If not, what do you suggest I convert the audio and video into so I can edit it in Premiere? TIA.

Okay I'm a little further. I renamed the video file to an mpeg and now it opens fine in premiere. The audio is not supported though I guess. When I rename the whole thing (video and audio) to an mpeg, it plays fine on WMP, but Premiere crashes. What format should I convert this audio too? TIA.

Well, the VOB file is not an MPEG, but it contains that. It also contains more than just the MPEG, such as subtitles. You can use TMPGEnc to extract the video and audio tracks and multiplex them together as a real MPEG file, then Premiere should be able to handle it, at least the video portion. The audio, AC3, might not be supported in Premiere, but I can't tell you that for sure.

Thanks for the reply. Can you multiplex them (audio and videotrac) together with TMPGEnc? If not, can't I just put each of them into Premiere separately? Thanks again.

You can multiplex them with TMPGEnc I believe. If not, you can use the freeware tool bbMPEG for multiplexing. That's what I used for multiplexing SVCD streams as TMPGEnc did it wrong. Dunno if you can load them separately into Premiere, never tried that.
