audio rec. problems - cubase/dmx 6fire

i am experiencing difficulties when recording audio from turntables/tape decks onto my terratec DMX6fire sound card.
I am using the line in on the front of the panel, and playback before recording is perfect. however, when listening to the recording in cubase SX, or wavelab, it is peppered with glitches, clicks etc. a red LED on the front of my P.C. seems to sometimes coincide with the sound errors.
Can anyone offer any help? My system includes an Athlon 1gig processor, 240mb RAM, 18gig had drive (FAT32), 8 gigs free.
audio gathered from CD is perfect. could anyone also offer advice on settings for latency/DMA buffer size? i experience no problems with latency, but after trying various settings i cannot remember the optimum settings! Thank you for your time.

Not trying to give you a hard time, but you really have to allow more than 2 hours for people to read your post and reply. I'd say a specialized forum would be a better bet for this specific issue, if Dave doesn't have the answer you need, I don't think anyone else here would. This reply will bump the thread, maybe someone else might have some ideas.

Since you're using Steinberg products, try uninstalling the ASIO drivers and reinstall them. Run the ASIO diag and allow it to set your latency. Other than that, your problem sounds headroom related. Someplace along the signal path a gain stage is too hot. That would cause what you are describing. Are you running the signal through a preamp at all? Since a record player/turntable's output is so low, I would assume so. But if you're not, that could also be a source of your problem.

thanks dave, I'll check it out! i have just noticed that when i use windows sound recorder, the recording is fine, but through the line in on the sound card it is terrible on wavelab and cubase. it isn't peaking or distorting though because i monitor the levels as i record. i'm suspecting that my computer is becoming to slow to cope, i'm doubling my RAM. p.s. yes i'm sorry for being impatient!! i'm just stuck!!
