I was using Pc-cillin 2003 and my subscription has run out so I decided to try a few of the free AV programs. I tried Avast, Eztrust and AVG. I like AVG the best. Does anybody have any complaints about them? When there is an outbreak, do they offer updates quickly?

Thanks

AVG is the most recommended free anti-virus program here, so it must be pretty good.

I use it as a backup for Norton AV. No complaints.

I have no complaints about AVG, but I feel that the free EZTrust is a better program.

Im running a P3 450 with 640meg of RAM and eztrust slowed my machine down more than AVG. AVG zaps almost nothing for system resources.

The former InoculateIt, right? I don't see a freebie over there, just a 30-day trial.

You can get eztrust armor that includes a firewall for free for a year. You have the option of just installing only the AV program.

I am running AVG and love it, and for the price difference, i like it better than Norton.

I like PC-Cillin on my main computer, but when the subscription runs out I'll be putting AVG on that box as well.

Anybody know how Grifsoft is during an outbreak? Are they quick with updates?

Looks like I might switch to etrust or avast. Check this out from virus bulletin:

Too bad too because I really liked AVG.

Too bad too because I really liked AVG. What do you mean? Both the last tests with Win 2003 Server and WinXP Pro respectively show a 100% PASS! That means they've really improved it from their past short-comings, and hopefully will keep getting better. Personally, I've had no problems with it. Also, I installed it on a friend's machine and it tagged 5 virii that Norton didn't catch. Now let's start talking about failure rates...

You have a point. I was specificaly looking at the Windows XP. But you are correct they have gotten better. I might have jumped the gun a little. You seem to have had some experience with AVG. Are they quick to provide updates during an outbreak?

Thanks

PcWorld has a good comparison of free antivirus programs:

Thanks I haven't used it too long, and don't think I had it during the last outbreak. In general, they seem to keep updated quite well. I just use it to back up Norton, I figure it's free and can't hurt to have a backup. I have lots of hard drive space and resources to spare, so what the heck. I'm not paranoid, nor do I frequent questionable websites, but I am fastidious about keeping my machine safe.
