PC will not power down

I have a home built K7 700 with an abit motherboard. When you shutdown in win2k or win98 the system shuts down but does't power off. When I plug the PC in the system powers up but doesn't boot up. You have to push the power button to boot it. any ideas?

If its an AT style case, the pc will not power off. It will just stay at the "Its now safe to turn off your computer screen". With an ATX case, the screen will not appear and the computer will just turn off.

If your case is ATX, you still have to push the button to turn it on.(Mine is like that anyway).

It is an ATX case. The problem isn't that I have to push the button to power it up or down the problem is that the power will not shut off unless I unplug it. Also when I plug it in the power comes on, the power supply fan starts up, the ligths on the case come on but the pc will not actually start booting up until I push the button.

It sounds like something's wired wrong on plugged into the motherboard wrong. On the ATX style motherboard, make sure the "power-on" plug from the front of the case (single plug with 2 wires) is plugged to the right prongs on the motherboard. It's often in with a group of other prongs so it's easy to get it wrong. Other than that, I've never heard of this problem.

These things are weird somethings. I had a case that when it was plugged in the fan would come on but after about a second it would cut off. You could then hit the power switch and everything booted fine. My thought is that it's the power supply. So I am installed a primo power supply and it did the same thing. So then I put another motherboard into the the same case and it was fine.

You might make sure and disable any power saving stuff (unless you are in California). Also the default is to not power off until the button is held in 4 seconds. But it should start right away.
