Hey all,
I have a problem with a random lockups in Counterstrike. I've played counterstrike for a while and and about a week ago I experience random lockups in the game, they can occur at any time and sometimes they don't occur at all. Solid lockup, had to hard reboot. Ever since then I get occasional lockups in Counterstrike. Sometimes the sound keeps going...sometimes it doesn't, btw this only happens while playing online. Could be the lag from my dialup connection that is causing this? Could it be RC5 running in the background. I'm running a brand new ATI Radeon 64mb and windows 2000/DX 8. I have not tried running it win98 yet so I don't know if it's an issue there too. Any ideas? Thanks in Advance!
I'm getting the same thing in UT flop, and I don't know why.
At first I was thinking that the Voodoo5 card is just big enough to be cutting off airflow (I have four case fans, one in the front for intake, two on the side blowing down into CPU area, and one taking hot air out of the top, all 80mm). Between the mess of IDE cables at the top, and the Voodoo card sticking out past my hidden drive bays in the front, I might have a problem with airflow to the top of the case.
But then again, if that's the case why would this happen all of a sudden, and not shortly after I got the Voodoo5?
I'm also noticing weird things with AIM. Stuff like "out of memory" errors when I let it sit for a long time. That makes no sense considering I was getting the out of memory stuff after a reboot, with no other apps running except for the "standard" stuff (explorer, systray, etc.)
Are you running NTFS or VFAT still flop? I'm thinking this might be an issue there.

I read in a UT support forum a while back that turning the DirectSound option to off in the UT preferences helps prevent random lock ups. Turning this off solved a random lock up problem for me. But then your problem started occuring out of the blue, so I'm not sure this will help.
Don't know about Counter Strike as I've never had any problem with it.

Hey Xayd,
You run win2k too right? That puts me at ease a little..maybe it's win2k related somehow. The funny thing is I just started getting this one day all of a sudden, it played fine for a week and then..bam, random lockups. I reinstalled half-life and counterstrike today and haven't had a lockup so far. I'm using FAT32 for my file system. Like I mentioned I have't played in windows 98 yet, my guess is it probably won't happen there. I really don't think my system is overheating either, I have 2 case fans one right behind the cpus, and like I said I haven't had this problem from the start, just like you. Will keep you updated on how it goes and see if I get these lockups again.
I guess the bottom line here is that windows 2000 still is not a gamer's operating system.

Same here, no problems, everything worked, then bam, started locking up. Mine on the surface seems to be hardware related, since it only happens when there's alot of "action" going on (like if I shoot a nuke, then jump off of a ledge and the vid card has to render a large landscape that's falling quickly).
Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to go buy another UT CD to reinstall, damn little brother made off with mine when he left here from the Christmas holidays.

Hey Xayd,
Just thought I'd let you know that ever since I reinstalled I haven't had any lockups. I now always pause RC5 when I play and then have it continue when I'm done. Maybe that was the cause? I don't know. Just thought I'd update you.
Well, mine turned out to be heat. I normally don't run any monitoring utilites, but I fired up mobo monitor after one of those lockups and WOW, 132 degrees farenheit. Turned my heater off and all was well ;).
