Different NIC's = different dl speeds?

Noticed something curious the other day with an older HP machine. I installed a Netgear FA311 nic and added it to my network in order to run Windows Update. It seemed to be running quite slow so I tested it with McAfee's speedometer. Download speed was only in the 700 range. Thought that was odd because the system sitting next to it, which uses onboard LAN, showed 1600. Pulled the Netgear nic out and installed a new Belkin nic I have. Added the correct drivers for both cards, btw. The Belkin tested at 1000. Still couldn't get to 1600. Any ideas what would cause this? Am I missing some settings in the Networking configuration?

I would run the test with a online speed test, and see if it says the same thing, could be a Mcaffee thing

gave me 4.5 megbits

I couldn't think of the one I normally use

its pitstop and for a cable connection use the fastest one there as you will need at least the 5 meg download test

pitstop gave me a 4641 kb/s download speed
and a 361 kb/s up

used the 2 meg file forthe fastest test

I use pitstop quite a bit too. Tried dslreports a bit ago and both sites are reporting about the same speed. When I get that 98 system back, I'm gonna do some more testing. I just read up on both nic's and it looks like the default settings are what is holding them back. Both web sites have instructions on how to change the configurations. Something to do with the 10/100, full duplex, and half duplex settings. If I find the secret I'll post back in this thread.

With 98, you need to optimize the RWIN for broadband, it defaults to dialup defaults. I believe Pitstop addresses this somewhere.
